Recognizing the commercial and social heart of any community is its downtown, where residents can live, work and entertain, the City of Mercedes strives to promote an environment that is vigorous and welcoming to businesses, visitors and residents. The Mercedes Downtown District offers more than 65 diverse businesses in one central location to accommodate the demands of everyday life. The Downtown District businesses cater to all aspects of an individual’s lifestyle providing access to banking, insurance, automotive repair, home décor, medical services, shopping and restaurants. Businesses such as HEB Grocery, State Farm Insurance, First National Bank, Texas National Bank, Subway, Coach’s Pharmacy, Bealls and Enterprise Rent-A-Car, as well as local specialty stores provide patrons with South Texas charisma as well as goods and services. In addition, the district hosts many of the community’s events such as the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show’s parade and the city’s centennial celebration.
This central business district offers one of the best commercial locations in the area as it is centrally located in Mercedes along US Expressway 83. In addition, it is also supported by Business 83. Both thoroughfares provide access to the entire community and Rio Grande Valley. The Downtown District’s location provides shopping opportunities not only for the residents of Mercedes but also residents of the surrounding communities of La Feria, Weslaco, La Villa, Edcouch, Elsa, Santa Rosa and Santa Maria. With the construction of the Rio Grande Valley Premium Outlet Mall and the development of the Mercedes Retail Corridor, the Mercedes Downtown District now finds itself in a complementary role, offering visiting shoppers from as far south as Mexico City and as far north as Canada a place to kick up their feet from a weary day of nonstop shopping at one of the many local eateries.
The City of Mercedes is committed to promoting, advocating and participating in a dynamic and vibrant Downtown District. Through public and private partnerships, the Development Corporation of Mercedes currently provides grants for store front improvements and signage. In addition, the Development Corporation also provides incentives for new construction and job training. It is the goal of the community to continue the growth of the city’s most established area by supporting new ventures and deep rooted enterprises alike.
